Working with the free or paid services from DNS4Me, this software determines what IP numeric address your ISP has assigned in your last transaction with it and reports it to the company's DNS servers so that your verbal address, like MyName.DNS4Me.com, is linked to your IP address, like 218.95.5.36 which is actually used to connect to your server. This software requires some intervention to get it running on my machine, when set to start up when I log on. It does not wait long enough, and quits before I get my wireless connection through my modem to my ISP, and exits with an error message. I then wait until the network is established and restart it.
Another consideration with this whole kind of service is that you have to have some way of safely passing through selected traffic to your server without exposing your whole system to the internet, unfiltered. I have not been able to get all the pieces working for my web server, and while I can see it on localhost, the software loopback adapter on my machine, I cannot see anything coming in from the internet, just responses to pings that tell me the machine is visible. That may be an Apache configuration problem. I was trying to set up a mapserver to provide maps as part of a final project due today, so I have not had time to diagnose problems at a detailed level. That's as fair as I can make this review. I will probably set up a on a free or inexpensive hosting site, when I resume development on this, so I can dispense with all the tweaking it takes to keep a virtual server connected to a URL, with safety. I tried something similar years ago that worked off my wireless access point. Belkin promoted it. That didn't end up with a working server online, either. Probably user error...
