PCLReader Views & Converts PCL & Text into PDF, PDF/A, XPS, TIFF, BMP, PNG, PCX and ASCII Text. Once viewed, a PCL or Text file can be printed to any Windows printer driver. This is useful in when you have a non-LaserJet PCL printer and need to print a Mortgage Loan, Insurance or other form-intensive legacy applications that requires PCL4/5/5e LaserJet printers.
The ASCII text can be extracted from PCL files for data migration. PCLReader is the first commercial quality PCL viewer/converter to be released as FREEWARE.

PCLReader is a limited, subset of PageTech's PCLWorks Program ($89) to showcase what the commercial product can do. PCLWorks program can convert PCL & Text into vector EMF, WMF and PMF formats. It can also convert to various levels of vector/text/raster PDF and PDF/A files. It's only page volume limitation is a 50,000 pages per 30-day interval. PCLWorks includes the full suite of PCL application developer tools including: Img2PCL, Img2PDF, PCLSplit and PCLCodes.
However, most of PageTech's business is derived from OEM's other licensees of its various PCLTool SDK ($495-$5,195) options. SDK page volumes range from 50,000 pages per 30-days to unlimited pages. Options include writing you own .NET code using our API to using our PCLXForm program with it's custom script programming language for rapid application development, maximum flexibility and extensibility.
PageTech has been providing PCL transformation and typeface conversion tools to the software developer marketplace since 1993.

I had a file from a kid's online site that supposedly held my son's userID and password, but it had no extension. After poking around I discovered it was a pcl file. Did a quick Google search, found this program, installed it and voila!! My son was glad to be back online.

This product offers a lot of features some might not even believed could exist when looking for a "PCL reader" software. This makes the user interface sometimes a bit unclear, and this is the only drawback I could find.

I tried pcl reader, pcl codes, and pcl tool. None of them could extract the ASCII text from the pcl file that I captured from my parallel port. I cannot change the printer type on the system that generates the pcl output. I did not test the program further at that point.

Version: 8.80The program failed to extract the text from either a single page or multipage (max 6 pages) text-based output to a HP6122 despite various attempts at changing the input parameters. The output was in landscape format. The tiff output was properly constructed (except for the page header which was in a very large font and seemed to comprise a small and Omnipage correctly performed the text conversion on the tiff images. PCLReader also failed to run on a Win98se machine. The application was to capture the output from a third party machine which only printed results and deposit them in a database for further processing
