Create, playback, and print sheet music for free. MuseScore is open source music notation software that runs on Windows, MacOS, and Linux, and is available in over thirty different languages. It features an easy to use WYSIWYG editor with audio score playback for results that look and sound beautiful, rivaling commercial offerings like Finale and Sibelius.

Most elements in MuseScore are laid out automatically but can also be positioned manually. The capabilities of MuseScore can be extended via plugins, and the growing repository on musescore.org contains many plugins submitted by users.
MuseScore includes a set of sounds that reproduce common instruments (as defined by General MIDI) without taking up a lot of disk space or memory, but you can also substitute any SoundFont you prefer for a wider variety of sounds or for more realism.
MuseScore can import and export MIDI and MusicXML files, and it can also import from Capella and several other programs. MuseScore can export to PDF, PNG, and other graphic formats, to WAV and other audio formats, or to Lilypond for an alternative layout and print option.
MuseScore can upload scores directly to the score sharing site musescore.com. Program support is provided on musescore.org.

I'm still evaluating it. So far, I've got it to hang on me by inserting a note (middle C). If you wish, I'll revisit this review after I have some time to use it; within a week or two.

Awesome open source software. I don't know notation very well, and am limited by my own lack of knowledge. However, even with a great lack on my part, MuseScore makes up for it with its easy to use interface, and its wonderful, concise, and thorough help menu. I had need to use the forum (because of my lack of knowledge) and had a quick response from that also.....so looks like the forum is as good at the software. Thanks loads.

At this stage I have not been able to use my own midi VSTI as I was considering live performance using a lap top and the screened score with active scroll eg like karaoke only with music.
The product is good at producing detailed multi part charts however I cant get it to play midi GS standard when I load my backing tracks ie the drums are currently piano sounds.
I have both internal and external sound units but can get neither to work even by following the prompts?

Version: 0.9.4MuseScore is a lovely program, user friendly and just what I needed. I can now record my songs on my PSR3000 yamaha, save them on a memory stick and import the midi data on my PC to musescore. What a lovely surprise to see all the music printed out on score, ready to use. I can add lyrics and the name of the chords, only use the top line and quickly create a lead sheet. Thank you very much, keep up the good work.
